Photo of the day
The spotted eagle ray gliding gracefully over a coral reef in today’s photo is a perfect representation of the biodiversity supported by this type of ecosystem. Reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable habitats on the planet, supporting more species per unit area than any other marine environment. Hidden amongst and swimming nearby corals around the world, you’ll find everything from molluscs, microscopic plankton, marine insects and spiders, sea snakes, and 4,000 fish species, to turtles, seabirds, dugongs, sharks, rays, and whales. What’s more, scientists think there could be millions of undiscovered organisms living in and around reefs! Every coral planting project funded by you and your fellow Only One members rebuilds the reef with corals more able to withstand climate change, protecting ocean wildlife in the process.
