The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary has officially been designated! This marks California's first sanctuary in over 25 years — and the only one to be co-managed by Indigenous groups in partnership with the federal government. Spanning 4,500 square miles, it will safeguard a diverse range of wildlife and protect the ancestral waters of the Chumash and Salinan Tribes. 🦦🌊🌅Source: NPR
