Are you part of an environmental organization? Would you like to help advance marine protection? If yes, then this is for you! The Pacific Remote Islands Coalition — of which Only One is a member — is looking for any and all environmental groups to sign on in support of a joint national organizational letter asking that President Biden expand the two remaining areas of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument — Howland and Baker Islands, and Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll — out to the 200 nautical-mile extent of the United States’ exclusive economic zone, protecting these biologically and culturally significant waters from destructive human activities such as deep-sea mining and industrial fishing for generations to come. The proposal also requests that President Biden rename the area to reflect its cultural and historic importance and to engage indigenous communities in a new form of co-management that spans the Pacific region, bringing people together around a shared history and future. Please join in support of the Pacific Remote Islands Coalition’s proposal to increase protections by signing the joint national organizational letter before the deadline on September 23. And, if you haven’t already, make sure to add your name to the official public petition!
